What is Water Baptism?

Water baptism is a public declaration of a believer’s faith and commitment in Jesus Christ. It is the next step after one has received salvation from Christ through faith and repentance and is an important foundation for the Christian life.

Baptism by immersion symbolically identifies us with Jesus’ death on the cross, His burial, and His resurrection from the dead.

"For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.” (Romans 6:4).

Water baptism does not make us a believer, it shows that we are already one! Water baptism does not ‘save’ us; only our faith in Jesus Christ does that.

God saved you by his grace when you believed.” (Ephesians 2:8a).

Our Lord Jesus commanded it
Water baptism is an act of faith and obedience to the command of Christ our Lord.

“Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20).

We follow Jesus’ example
Jesus himself was baptised. He was not a sinner, yet he humbled himself in obedience to identify with us and provide an example to follow.

“One day Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and John baptized him in the Jordan River.” (Mark 1:9)

Baptism connects us to the ‘body of Christ’, the local church
In baptism we are being joined with other believers, not just participating in an individual act … “But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 12:13b).

How are we to be baptised?
By being immersed in water as was Jesus in MATTHEW 3:16a, “After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, …” The word “baptise” comes from the Greek word ‘baptizo’ which means “to immerse under water.”

Who should be baptised?
Every person who has accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. (Acts 2:38)

Children below the age of 18 who believe and are matured enough to understand the meaning of water baptism can also be baptised with parental/guardian consent.

When are we to be baptised?
As soon as you have believed! You should not delay. Believers in the New Testament times were baptised the same day they accepted Christ. (Acts 2:41, 8:38-39)

What about being baptised twice?
This is when your baptism was not by immersion and you want to be baptised in the same way Jesus was baptised.

Can a family be baptised together?
Yes! If each family member fully understands the purpose and meaning of water baptism. In fact families are encouraged to be baptised at the same service as a testimony to other families.
